BSDFAS visit to National Gallery of Sporting Art and Tour of the National Stud, 15 March 2018

The National Heritage Centre for Horse Racing and Sporting Art is situated across about 5 acres in the centre of the town.  The heritage of Newmarket and the racehorse have been linked since James 1 and his court stopped in town for hunting and hawking in 1604.  The town has also been home to the Jockey Club since the 1750s.  Palace House was bought by the local district council in the early 1990ís to prevent further damage to the Grade11* listed building and to save this gem of Newmarketís royal history.

The Centre holds an internationally significant collection of horse-racing memorabilia, a national gallery showing the finest examples of British Sporting Art from around the UK and horses at close quarters.

The photographs show a statue of Mill Reef, a race trophy and a painting of a 19thC race day
